World Cup Crowds Drive Record MARTA Ridership

The FIFA World Cup has highlighted just how important transit is to keeping Atlanta moving.

Since June 11, more than 2 million trips have been taken on MARTA’s rail system, with roughly one-third of those trips connected to World Cup matches and Fan Festival activities. On the busiest day so far, June 24, MARTA recorded 220,000 rail trips—more than double a typical weekday.

To support the increased demand, MARTA has been operating trains every five minutes on match and Fan Festival days while deploying additional transit ambassadors, volunteers, and public safety staff throughout the system.

One of the biggest takeaways is that MARTA has continued to provide this level of service without increasing fares, making transit an affordable and reliable option for both residents and visitors.

As Atlanta prepares to host additional matches, including the semifinal on July 15, these numbers reinforce the value of planning ahead and choosing transit whenever possible. For Buckhead commuters, taking MARTA and connecting to The Buc Shuttle remains one of the easiest ways to avoid traffic, reduce parking stress, and keep the city moving during this historic time.
