Buckhead’s First Responder Housing Subsidy Program

If you’re an Atlanta Police Department officer, we’d love for you to live in Buckhead! Learn more about the monthly housing stipend of $650 per month and find out if you qualify by reading the program guidelines below.

General Program Guidelines

  • Funding will be provided on a first-come first-served basis for up to five individuals for the year
  • Eligible participants must meet the criteria outlined below
  • Selected housing must be located within the Livable Buckhead 28 square mile service areas.
  • Participating first responder must be a new resident to Buckhead within the Buckhead CID boundaries.

Eligibility Criteria

The participating officer must…

  • Be employed as full-time sworn officers in good standing with the City of Atlanta Police Department.
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from commanding officer

Application Process

Step 1:  Complete online application.  Button below.

Step 2:  Conduct in-person interview with Livable Buckhead.

Step 3:  Once notified that you are a selected applicant, you will receive a letter confirming the additional income that you will be receiving each month.  This letter should be used in your lease application for the selected property.

Step 4:  Complete the rental application process for the property where you wish to live working directly with the property management team for the property.  Provide the program enrollment letter to document the additional income you will be receiving. The lease must be for a 12-month period.  Most properties will require the lease to being within 75 days of the application approval.

Step 5:  If you are successful in being approved by the property, provide a copy of the lease to Livable Buckhead for final approval.  You will need to provide banking information to facilitate the direct deposit of the monthly subsidy.

Step 6:  Once you receive final approval from Livable Buckhead, execute the lease with the property and move in.

Step 7:  Within 2 weeks of your move in date, you must connect with Zone 2 to get oriented on the trends and strategies underway in the zone.

Step 8:  Conduct your monthly activities, document those activities in the monthly report and submit that report each month no later than the 5th of the following month to asenzer@atlataga.gov and calvin@livablebuckhead.org.

Step 9:  Notify calvin@livablebuckhead when your lease is up and your move out date is determined.  Provide your forwarding address and contact information for the distribution of your 1099 for tax purposes.

Step 10:  Reflect the income earned through this program on your tax filing.

Community Service Requirements

  • Officers receiving the housing subsidy are asked to support the Buckhead community by providing 2 hours each week in visible service to community. Suggested activities are outlined below and it is requested that the officers be visible in APD approved formal or casual wear.
  • Providing visible presence on PATH400
  • Providing traffic control services for special events hosted by Livable Buckhead
  • Attending local civic association meetings
  • Attending Neighborhood Planning Unit meetings
  • Meeting regularly with the Zone 2 commanders to discuss issues, crime trends, and enforcement strategies.  (This is especially important if the officer’s regular assignment is not with Zone 2.)
  • Conducting regular drop-ins with surrounding business, and becoming familiar with these community stakeholders.
  • Conducting monthly blood pressure check events for area residents in conjunction with Livable Buckhead.
  • Providing fire education and safety tips for residents and area businesses
  • If the officer has ability to bring patrol car home, it should be highly visible on the property.
  • Participating officers are required to submit a brief monthly written summary of their community activities by the 5th of the following month.
  • Participating officers are required to coordinate with Livable Buckhead staff to be featured on the website and through organizational communications.

Other Considerations

The officer must be able to:

  • Submit a copy of fully executed 12-month lease from apartment complex or rental agency to Livable Buckhead.
  • Be approved through screening/application procedures for selected property.
  • Provide bank account information to allow for direct deposit of funds on a monthly basis.
  • Use subsidy funding must be used to pay rent, not other personal expenses.
  • Secure renter’s insurance to cover the property for the term of the lease.

Disclaimer

The funding provided through this subsidy program is intended to provide additional financial support to offset the cost of housing for first responders who wish to live in the Buckhead Community.  It does not constitute or imply any additional responsibility or participation in the agreement between the participating officer/fire fighter.  Specifically:

  • The participating officer/fire fighter is solely responsible for the timely payment of rent and any fees for late payment.
  • The participating officer is solely responsible for any damage to the property, cleaning penalties, forfeiture of security deposit, etc resulting from their presence at the property.
  • Only one subsidy will be allowed per unit/lease even if multiple officers live together as roommates.
  • If the participating officer’s employment with APD  is terminated by either party, there will be a 60-day grace period before the subsidy will end.

Livable Buckhead reserves the right to terminate the arrangement if the participating officer does not provide two hours of community service, defaults on terms of their lease, is evicted from the property, terminates their lease agreement, or leaves full time employment of the Atlanta Police Department either of their own accord or being terminated by either organization.
