Bike Maintenance Made Easy: A Beginner’s Guide

Taking care of your bike doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, learning just a few basic skills can save you money, keep your rides safe, and make cycling more fun. The good news? We have videos that walk you through every step. Here’s a simple guide to get started.
Know Your Bike: The Main Parts
Before you can fix or adjust anything, it helps to know the parts of your bike.
-
Frame – the skeleton of your bike, connecting all the parts.
-
Wheels – made up of the hub, spokes, rim, tire, and inner tube.
-
Drivetrain – pedals, crankset, chain, gears, and cassette (the cluster of sprockets on the back wheel).
-
Brakes and levers – help you stop safely.
-
Shifters and derailleurs – move your chain between gears.

How to Change a Flat Tire
Flats are the most common bike problem—but also one of the easiest to fix once you’ve practiced.
-
Remove the wheel (quick-release levers make this easy).
-
Take off the tire and pull out the inner tube.
-
Check for sharp objects that caused the puncture.
-
Insert a new (or patched) tube, put the tire back on, and inflate.

Basic Shifter Adjustment
If your gears skip, grind, or won’t shift smoothly, the derailleur (the part that moves your chain between gears) might need a quick adjustment.
-
Use the barrel adjuster on your shifter to fine-tune cable tension.
-
Small turns (¼ at a time) can make your shifting smooth again.
-
Check both front and rear derailleurs for alignment.

Replacing Your Chain
Chains wear out over time, and replacing them keeps your bike running smoothly and prevents damage to your gears.
-
Measure chain wear with a chain checker tool.
-
Use a chain tool or quick link pliers to remove the old chain.
-
Thread the new chain through your drivetrain.
-
Size it correctly (don’t make it too long) and reconnect with a quick link or pin.

Why Bike Maintenance Matters
-
Saves money – Simple fixes at home cost far less than shop repairs.
-
Improves safety – A well-maintained bike is less likely to fail mid-ride.
-
Boosts confidence – Knowing you can handle a flat or gear issue keeps you riding more often.
