Climate Resilient ATL: A Citywide Call to Action for a Stronger, Greener Future

 In Community, Sustainability

The City of Atlanta is in the process of developing its first-ever climate resilience action plan, and Buckhead has an important role to play. Known as Climate Resilient ATL, this initiative is being led by the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and Resilience, with community engagement support from Hummingbird—a local firm specializing in equity-focused public input and strategy.

This effort addresses how Atlanta can better respond to the impacts of climate change, including extreme heat, flooding, energy burdens, and disruptions to food and transportation systems. The plan will include both mitigation strategies, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and adaptation strategies, such as building infrastructure and systems that can withstand future climate stresses.

The process is built around extensive public engagement, with a goal of hearing from more than 2,500 Atlantans. Special emphasis is being placed on communities that are disproportionately affected by rising energy costs and other climate-related risks. That community-driven approach ensures that the plan reflects a broad range of lived experiences and local priorities.

For Buckhead, this planning effort touches on several key areas—building energy performance, infrastructure resilience, transportation options, and food access among them. For commercial office property managers and employers, it offers a chance to align with citywide goals, reduce operational risks, and demonstrate sustainability leadership. For residents, it’s an opportunity to weigh in on policies that will shape Atlanta’s approach to climate resilience in the coming decades.

Livable Buckhead encourages participation in this citywide effort. A community survey is currently open, and additional events, public input opportunities, and even a logo design contest are underway. Sharing feedback from Buckhead helps ensure this plan works for all corners of the city—commercial districts, residential neighborhoods, and everything in between.
