TRAFFIC ALERT: Major I-285 Closure Could Impact Buckhead Travel This Weekend
Buckhead drivers should prepare for heavier-than-normal traffic throughout the weekend as the Georgia Department of Transportation shuts down a major stretch of I-285 on Atlanta’s west side for reconstruction work.
Closure Details: All northbound and southbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (Exit 9)
- Cascade Road (Exit 7)
Closure Schedule
- Begins: Friday, May 15 at 7:00 PM
- Reopens: Monday, May 18 at 5:00 AM
Why Buckhead Drivers Should Care: Even though the closure is on the west side, traffic impacts are expected across the metro area, including Buckhead as major interstate closures often create rolling traffic impacts across the metro area. Drivers may experience:
- Increased congestion on the top end of I-285
- Delays on I-75 and GA-400
- Heavier traffic around Buckhead exits and connector routes
- Longer travel times to and from the airport, West Midtown, and Cobb County
Weekend events, dining traffic, and regional travel patterns could also increase congestion throughout Buckhead’s commercial corridors.
Suggested Tips
- Allow extra travel time throughout the weekend
- Use MARTA when possible
- Check navigation apps before leaving
- Consider avoiding cross-town trips during peak hours
Detours
- Southbound traffic will be diverted at I-20
- Northbound traffic will exit at Langford Parkway for access to I-75/85
