A Commitment to Service: Frederick Johnson
For one Atlanta Police Department officer, Frederick Johnson, the motivation to serve has always come from a place of purpose.
“I wanted to make a meaningful impact by ensuring safety, promoting justice, and being a positive presence in people’s lives,” he said. “That’s what led me to law enforcement.”
Officer Johnson’s journey began with a strong sense of duty and a desire to help others. Through rigorous physical and mental training, he developed the resilience and skills needed to meet the demands of the job. Over the years, his experience across different areas of policing brought him to the Atlanta Police Department—where his focus remains centered on connection and impact.
“The most rewarding part of this job is knowing I can make a difference. Whether it’s solving a case or simply having a conversation with someone who needs support—those are the moments that matter.”
A big part of building those moments comes from being embedded in the community he serves, made possible through the Livable Buckhead First Responder Housing Program.
“I applied because I saw the chance to be more connected. Living where I work lets me build stronger relationships with residents. It also eases the financial stress of housing, which allows me to focus more fully on the job.”
Since moving into Buckhead, he’s experienced firsthand how proximity fosters connection. “I’m more accessible and engaged. Just seeing people regularly and having those day-to-day conversations builds trust. It’s those small moments that really strengthen community ties.” Frederick makes it a point to stay visible—stopping in at local businesses, chatting with neighbors, attending events, and showing up at places like the At-Promise Centers each month. “Presence is powerful. When people know who you are outside of a crisis, it changes how they see the badge.”
The impact goes beyond community engagement. Personally, the housing subsidy has made a tangible difference. Johnson has been a part of the program for about a year.
“It’s helped me breathe. Living just two minutes from work has improved my routine, my energy, and my overall mindset. That shows up in how I serve.” He believes more officers living locally would be a major asset to Buckhead. Officer Johnson says, “With more patrol cars visible in the area and faster response times, it not only deters crime—it reassures the community. People feel safer when they see us living here too.” While property crimes like vehicle break-ins remain a concern, he stays proactive. “We focus on education—reminding residents to secure their vehicles, remove valuables, stay aware. Those small actions really do reduce opportunities for crime.”
His experience with the program has been smooth overall, with a few suggestions for future improvements. Frederick expressed, “The process was efficient, and the coordinators were helpful. If anything, expanding housing options and simplifying the paperwork could make it even better.” To fellow officers, his message is clear:
“Apply. This isn’t just about affordable housing—it’s about showing up for your community in a deeper way. It benefits us and the people we protect.”
For this officer, the Livable Buckhead program isn’t just a benefit—it’s a bridge. A bridge between badge and neighbor, presence and trust, challenge and purpose.
