A Commitment to Service: Tameika Williams

 In Employer, Housing, Safety

When service is part of your DNA, you don’t just choose the work—you live it. For one Atlanta Police Officer, that calling began in Jamaica, watching her father serve as a steady, respected presence in law enforcement. That early example, rooted in quiet strength and a sense of duty, laid the foundation for a life spent in service.

“I knew from a young age I wanted to protect people,” Tameika shared. “First, that meant joining the military. Later, it meant becoming a police officer.”

Her path to policing wasn’t immediate. At 29, she took the NYPD written exam. Three years later, she raised her right hand and swore to serve the people of New York. For seven years, she patrolled the streets of NYC—honing her skills and building resilience in one of the most challenging environments for law enforcement. But in 2022, a new opportunity called: Atlanta. Now, nearly two years into her role with the Atlanta Police Department, Tameika says the transition has offered both professional growth and deeper community connection. Officer Williams has been a part of the First Responder’s program for over a year.

“Here in Atlanta, I feel like I’ve found a community that values what we do,” she said. “When someone stops me to say thank you, it means everything. Those small moments remind me why I chose this path.”

One of the biggest support systems she’s found is the Livable Buckhead’s First Responder Housing Program—a program designed to offer financial relief and residential stability to those who serve.

“The subsidy has been a game-changer,” she said. “It’s not just about the money—it’s the peace of mind. I can do my job without carrying the weight of housing stress.”

Beyond financial assistance, the program has allowed Tameika to live in the same community she protects—an important step toward strengthening trust and accountability.

“When residents see me at the grocery store or out for a jog, it humanizes the badge,” she explained. “I’m not just showing up when something’s wrong—I’m part of their day-to-day lives.”

With more officers now living in Buckhead, public safety has improved. But challenges remain—particularly a sharp increase in vehicle break-ins.

“These are often crimes of opportunity,” he said. “We urge residents to take valuables out of their vehicles. Lock up. Be alert. That kind of vigilance makes a big difference.”

Looking ahead, she’s excited to get more involved in local events like the Big Peach Social Ride—a chance to connect with community members in a more casual, personal way. For other first responders considering the housing program, she has one message:

“Apply. This program isn’t just about housing—it’s about recognition, support, and community. It tells us: We see you. We appreciate you. And that matters.”
