Think Twice Before Donating These Items

 In Waste

Donating household items to a thrift store usually feels like the responsible choice. But many items cannot be resold because of safety, hygiene, or liability concerns, so stores often discard them. Not everything can be recycled either. Sometimes the most responsible option is simply to throw something away. Being a realistic recycler matters more than being an aspirational one. In Atlanta, many materials that cannot be donated can still be responsibly recycled through Live Thrive’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM), which accepts a wide range of items that traditional thrift stores and curbside recycling programs cannot handle. Below are several common donations thrift stores often throw away and the better options for handling them.

Knives: Many thrift stores refuse to sell knives because they can be considered potential weapons.
Better options

  • Offer quality kitchen knives to friends or family

  • Check with culinary schools or community kitchens

Reality check

  • Cheap or damaged knives usually need to be thrown away

  • Knives are not accepted at CHaRM

Car Seats and Strollers: Car seats are commonly rejected because they expire and may be recalled. Stores cannot verify whether they have been involved in accidents.
Better options

  • Pass them to family or friends who know their history

  • Look for manufacturer trade-in or recycling programs

Reality check

  • Many older seats ultimately need to be discarded

Partially Used Cosmetics and Skincare: Used makeup and skincare products cannot be resold for hygiene reasons.
Better options

  • Reuse glass containers for storage or crafts

  • Recycle packaging components when possible

CHaRM accepts some related household chemicals such as nail polish and remover.

Reality check

  • Most used cosmetics simply belong in the trash

Bike Helmets: Helmets are rarely accepted unless they are brand new because damage is not always visible.
Better options

  • Check with local cycling groups

  • Look for manufacturer recycling programs

CHaRM accepts bicycles but not helmets.

Reality check

  • Old helmets may need to be discarded

Reusable Grocery Bags: Thrift stores receive far more reusable bags than they can use or sell.
Better options

  • Keep extras in your car for shopping

  • Donate them to food banks or community pantries

Reality check

  • Worn bags may need to be thrown away

Broken Mirrors: Cracked mirrors are unsafe and unlikely to sell. Mirror glass also cannot go into normal recycling streams.
Better options

  • Reuse decorative frames

  • Salvage metal components when possible

CHaRM accepts flat glass and related materials.

Reality check

  • Some mirrors simply need to be disposed of

Vacuum Cleaners and Small Appliances: Vacuum cleaners are commonly rejected because they are dirty, missing parts, or worn out. Instead of donating them, they can often be recycled as electronic waste.
Better option

  • Bring them to CHaRM

Examples accepted include:

  • vacuum cleaners

  • microwaves and countertop ovens

  • coffee makers and mixers

  • fans and heaters

  • laptops, monitors, and TVs

  • printers, cables, and other electronics

Donate, Recycle, or Dispose: Donate items when they are clean, safe, and fully functional so someone else can use them right away. Recycle items when they are electronic or mechanical, contain chemicals or hazardous materials, or are accepted by a specialized recycling program. And sometimes the most responsible choice is simply to throw something away, especially when an item is broken beyond repair or when no recycling option exists.

Facilities like CHaRM help fill the gap between donation and disposal by recycling electronics, chemicals, appliances, plastics, and more. But when something truly reaches the end of its life, responsible disposal is sometimes the right call.
