Rethinking How Buckhead Moves
Across the United States, cities are reimagining how public transit can reduce congestion, lower emissions, and improve everyday quality of life. One of the most powerful recent examples comes from Iowa City, where leaders eliminated bus fares as part of a pilot program designed to encourage ridership and decrease car dependency. The impact was immediate and measurable: ridership surged beyond pre-pandemic levels, residents drove fewer miles, and carbon emissions dropped significantly. Riders described reduced stress and a new sense of freedom, no longer worrying about passes, payment, or whether a trip was “worth the fare.”
While Buckhead functions within a far larger and more complex urban ecosystem, the core lesson still applies. When cost and convenience barriers are reduced, people are far more likely to choose transit, and the ripple effects touch everything from air quality to employee wellbeing.
How Livable Buckhead Applies This Model Locally
Livable Buckhead is advancing that same principle through a layered mobility approach that blends affordability, flexibility, and accessibility. At the foundation is the Discount MARTA Pass Program, an employer-assisted initiative that helps make regional transit more affordable for Buckhead’s workforce. Participating employers can offer their teams monthly MARTA Breeze cards at a 20 percent discount, reducing the cost from $95 to $76 per card. There is no long-term commitment and no minimum monthly order, making it easy for companies of all sizes to participate. Employers submit a single monthly payment to Livable Buckhead and may choose whether the cost is covered by the company, the employee, or shared. The program also includes free consulting support to help structure pre-tax or subsidized commuter benefits, with a commuter survey required as part of participation. This program directly addresses the first barrier to transit: affordability. But Livable Buckhead doesn’t stop there.
The Buc Shuttle: Bridging the Gap Between MARTA and Daily Destinations
Complementing the discounted MARTA passes is The Buc, Buckhead’s on-demand shuttle service operated by Livable Buckhead and funded by the Buckhead Community Improvement District. The Buc functions as a crucial last-mile connector, extending the reach of MARTA and making transit a more realistic option for daily life.
Riders can travel free to and from the Buckhead and Lenox MARTA stations, while trips throughout the rest of the district are just $3. This seamless connection eliminates a common frustration for transit users: getting from the station to their final destination. Whether commuting to an office, meeting a client, shopping, or attending an event, riders can move easily through Buckhead without relying on a personal vehicle. Together, the MARTA discount and The Buc shuttle create a practical alternative to driving alone, one that is cost-effective, predictable, and increasingly convenient.
Why This Matters for Buckhead
The combined impact of these programs goes far beyond transportation logistics. They represent a shift in how Buckhead moves, works, and grows. Employees benefit from lower commuting costs, reduced stress, and greater access to opportunity, especially for those who do not own a vehicle or prefer not to drive daily. Employers gain a tangible, highly visible benefit that supports recruitment, retention, and corporate sustainability goals. The broader community sees fewer cars on the road, less congestion, and progress toward long-term climate and mobility objectives.
Like Iowa City’s success with fare-free transit, Livable Buckhead’s approach shows that when people are given affordable, accessible, and practical options, they choose them. The difference is that Buckhead is building a hybrid model, pairing regional rail and bus access with a localized shuttle network, tailored specifically to how our district functions day to day.
A Smarter Path Forward
While Iowa City demonstrated the transformative power of free transit, Buckhead is charting its own path, one rooted in realistic funding, employer participation, and strategic infrastructure. Through the Discount MARTA Pass Program and The Buc shuttle, Livable Buckhead is creating a mobility ecosystem that doesn’t just move people, but connects them to jobs, to services, to community, and to opportunity. The message is simple: better mobility creates a better Buckhead, and every affordable ride helps move us closer to that future.
