Live in Buckhead

Originally conceived as a trading post at the intersection of two major Native American trading routes, Buckhead not only retained its importance as a major hub of commerce but has also grown in ways few ever imagined was possible. Brought into the City of Atlanta in 1952, Buckhead today includes a 20 square mile area that is a collection of single family homes surrounding a major business core comprised of commercial office, dining, hospitality and shopping. Buckhead is the second largest “downtown” and were it a city, would be the 12th largest in the state of Georgia.

Mobility

Accessibility is vital to the prosperity and vibrancy of any community, and Buckhead has many options from which to choose. Buckhead sits just north of Midtown Atlanta, and is served on the east by I75, on the west by I85 and through the heart, by GA400. Reaching well south of Downtown, the main north-south street of Buckhead is Peachtree Road. Changing names to Peachtree Street south of Buckhead, this name change is significant in that it defines a border between Buckhead and Midtown. The main east-west street is Paces Ferry Road, named for a former ferry that used to cross the Chattahoochee River. In addition to Peachtree and West Paces Ferry Roads, other arterial roads include Piedmont Road, Roswell Road, and Northside Parkway.

Traffic in Atlanta can be a challenge and luckily Buckhead is served by three MARTA rail stations, the southernmost being Lindbergh Center. Just north of there, the Red and Gold lines split, with the Gold Line’s Lenox station at the southwest corner of the Lenox Square parking lot, and the Red Line’s Buckhead station on the west side of the malls where Peachtree crosses GA400. In addition to ridesharing companies Uber and Lyft, Buckhead also offers residents a variety of last-mile connectivity options, such as Relay Bike Share, which expanded into Buckhead in 2017.

For those looking for an added health component, Buckhead offers several pedestrians and cycling mobility options. These include on-going complete street improvements, as well as off-street networks of trails. These include:

  • PATH400
  • North Beltline Trail (Under construction)
  • Chastain Park Trail
  • Mountain River Trail
  • Paces Ferry Trail

Parks

Parks are essential to Buckhead and provides countless value to our residents. Parks provide residents and visitors with the opportunity to be physically active. People go to parks to improve their mood and reinvigorate themselves. The ability of green spaces to significantly improve the physical and mental health of its citizens is a cornerstone by which communities improve the quality of life.

Livable Buckhead is working diligently to increase the amount of greenspace in Buckhead, following the Buckhead Collection plan. You can check out more about Livable Buckhead’s work to develop greenspace in Buckhead.

Schools

Buckhead is home to many public and private schools. The public schools are part of the Atlanta Public School system and is run by the Atlanta Board of Education with superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring. The system has an active enrollment of 54,956 students, attending a total of 103 school sites: 50 elementary schools (three of which operate on a year-round calendar), 15 middle schools, 21 high schools, four single-gender academies and 13 charter schools. The school system also supports two alternative schools for middle and/or high school students, two community schools, and an adult learning center.

The Atlanta Board of Education establishes and approves the policies that govern the Atlanta Public School system. The board consists of nine members, representing six geographical districts, and three “at-large” districts. One person is elected per district to represent the schools in a given district for a four-year term. Under the provisions of the new board charter, approved by the Georgia Legislature in 2003, board members elect a new chairman and vice chairman every two years. The day-to-day administration of the school district is the responsibility of the superintendent, who is appointed by the board.

Multifamily Resources

The Buckhead apartment market enjoys exceptional strength and stability, and outlook remains bright for Atlanta’s multifamily developers, owners and investors. Although the growth rate has slowed down compared to previous decades, metropolitan Atlanta is still booming and growing at a much healthier pace. As the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) reports, the biggest driver of growth is jobs, with the housing market struggling to keep up with the influx of new residents.

Livable Buckhead is here to help your property and residents thrive in both Buckhead and metro Atlanta.

Public Art

Public art invites people in and encourages them to explore what the community has to offer. Art creates a sense of place and provides a reason for people to interact with the art, and with each other. Art weaves inspiration and beauty into the daily lives of those who live, work, and play in our community.

Livable Buckhead is working towards the development of a public arts program that celebrates Buckhead’s history and culture while providing a compelling walking environment, a world-class aesthetic and an authentic sense of place.

Community Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer activities include community clean-up days, help at events like PARK(ing) Day, plantings and eventually ambassadors for Livable Buckhead and PATH400.

Additionally, we offer corporate volunteer opportunities for groups. For team building, corporate outings or just to engage in the community, we can custom build an event for your organization.

Buckhead Cityhood Movement

The idea of Buckhead cityhood has been discussed in the past, but the idea is closer to a real possibility than ever before. The process to allow Buckhead residents to vote on leaving the City of Atlanta and becoming an independent municipality is underway in the Georgia General Assembly.

The road to Buckhead cityhood is long and the reasons driving it are complex. Neighbor Newspapers has answered some of the frequently asked questions regarding Buckhead cityhood.
