PARK(ing) Day Gets Greener

Cherry Street Energy signs on to provide solar power for Livable Buckhead events

ATLANTA – Sept. 7, 2018 – PARK(ing) Day – an event that transforms Lenox Square’s parking lot into 40 mini parks — just got a bit greener. Cherry Street Energy has signed on as the energy sponsor of Livable Buckhead and will provide solar-powered generators for the September 14 event, the first of three that will be powered almost entirely by sustainable energy during the remainder of 2018.

Cherry Street Energy’s solar generators will power food trucks for PARK(ing) Day, and will also supply power for two outdoor movie screenings Livable Buckhead plans to host in October. Livable Buckhead and Cherry Street Energy will also work together to explore ways to incorporate solar-powered features along PATH400 and in its connected parks.

“We are thrilled with this partnership because it gives us a chance to demonstrate that environmental sustainability goes hand-in-hand with events like PARK(ing) Day,” said Denise Starling, executive director of Livable Buckhead. “Our events are just the first of many opportunities to incorporate sustainable energy, and we’re looking forward to working with Cherry Street Energy to find even more practical ways to bring solar power to Buckhead.”

Cherry Street Energy’s renewable energy solutions help diversify and transform Georgia’s energy marketplace. The first and largest non-utility of its kind in the state, Cherry Street Energy provides municipalities, commercial and nonprofit entities a streamlined transition to renewable power. The company offers simple and economic solutions for customers to purchase sustainable energy and decrease their carbon footprint.

“We are excited to partner with Livable Buckhead showcasing solar generators as an efficient and resilient renewable energy source that can be deployed in a variety of innovative ways,” said Samantha Lenard, director of sustainability for Cherry Street Energy. “By implementing sustainable practices, Buckhead is reducing carbon emissions, creating a healthier environment and transforming the way we live, work and play.”

The solar generators are just one aspect of Livable Buckhead’s efforts to incorporate environmental sustainability into PARK(ing) Day. The nonprofit has contracted CompostNow to facilitate the composting of food waste for the event, and has partnered with LifeCycle Building Material to assist in using reclaimed material for the mini parks, as well as utilizing them for recycling the mini park material after the event.

Livable Buckhead’s PARK(ing) Day will take place on Friday, September 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lenox Square parking lot along Peachtree Rd. Local companies, schools, nonprofit groups and individuals build mini-parks that demonstrate a variety of creative visions for greenspace in the city. Last year’s event transformed 40 parking spaces and attracted more than 2,000 visitors, making it one of the largest PARK(ing) Day events in the Southeast. Each of the mini-parks will have interactive elements and visitors will be asked to vote for their favorites. PARK(ing) Day attendees can use the Lyft code ATLPARKINGDAY to received 25 percent off two rides to and from Lenox Square on the day of the event between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

PARK(ing) Day is sponsored by Simon Properties/Lenox Square, HGOR, Cherry Street Energy and the Atlanta Regional Commission. For more information on PARK(ing) Day registration and sponsorship, visit www.livablebuckhead.org.
