GA 400 Construction Is Starting

 In Blog, Employer, Mobility, Mobility

If you commute into Buckhead via GA 400, expect changes ahead.

Construction has officially kicked off on the SR 400 Express Lanes project — a major, multi-year effort that begins this spring and will continue through at least 2031.

What’s happening now

  • Crews are moving into active construction mode with equipment, work zones, and shifting traffic patterns along the corridor

  • Early work includes bridge foundations, utility relocation, and site prep

  • Drivers will begin seeing lane shifts and periodic closures as construction ramps up

Where this impacts you

  • The project runs ~16 miles from North Springs MARTA up into Forsyth County

  • Key pinch points near Sandy Springs and the 285 interchange will likely feel the biggest impacts early on

What’s coming long-term

  • Two new express lanes in each direction (tolled with dynamic pricing)

  • Designed to reduce congestion and support transit, including MARTA bus rapid transit in the corridor

What to expect for your commute

  • Slower trips and shifting patterns, especially during peak construction phases

  • Increased incident response support (similar to HERO units) to help keep traffic moving

  • A long construction window — this is a 5+ year reality, not a short-term disruption

What you can do now
This is a great time to test alternatives:

  • MARTA from North Springs

  • Carpool

  • Flexible or off-peak travel times
