COVID-19 has created a mental health crisis the likes of which we are only beginning to understand. The CDC reported that during late June of 2020 a whopping 40% of adults in the U.S. reported struggling with substance abuse or mental health.
Metro Atlanta has been far from immune to these damaging effects. We’ve witnessed a sharp jump in the number of drug overdose deaths, as well as across the board increases in substance use and mental health issues that seem very much in line with the numbers reported by the CDC.
Thankfully there is no shortage of resources available to support the Buckhead community as we move into 2021:

- The Crisis Text Line – Free text line that serves anyone, in any type of crisis, providing access to 24/7 support and information via texting. Text HOME to 741-741 from anywhere in the USA or Canada, anytime, about any type of crisis.
- Trevor Text – 1-866-488-7386 A service provided by the Trevor Project that aims to help LGBTQ youth who may be struggling with a mental health crisis. Text START to 678-678 anytime to be connected with a counselor.
Addiction Recovery Resources
- Atlanta AA – Find an Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting in Metro Atlanta.
- In The Rooms – Resource for finding virtual Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings 24/7.
- St Jude’s Recovery Center – Located in Midtown Atlanta, they are a great addiction treatment option for those with no financial resources or insurance.
- The Summit Wellness Group – 770-692-2052 – Outpatient treatment center with locations in both Midtown and Roswell. Provides referrals, care and support via phone and their website features comprehensive resource guides on overdose prevention, suicide prevention and how to find a Georgia rehab.
- The Georgia Overdose Prevention Project – This group provides information on Georgia’s amnesty laws when it comes to helping an overdose victim and provides free naloxone kits to Georgians through the mail.
- Medically Assisted – National directory of medically-assisted treatment centers that specialize in suboxone, vivitrol and methadone.
Suicide Prevention Resources
- National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – 1-800-273-8255 – This national lifeline provides free confidential support 24/7, 365 to anyone who is suffering from a mental health crisis that involves thoughts of suicide.
- Stop A Suicide Today – Helpful website that provides suicide prevention information for someone experiencing suicidal thoughts, their friends, and family.
- SAVE – A prevention and advocacy organization the provides a variety of resources for suicide awareness, links to care, and prevention guides.
