More meals at home lately? Compost that waste!

 In Blog, Sustainability, Waste

I think it’s safe to say that we’re all spending A LOT more time at home in 2020. And with that, comes more meals and overall waste in the house. Well what if I told you there was an extremely easy way to make sure your food scraps and other organic waste don’t wind up in a landfill – where they would take up precious space and release methane – but rather get diverted and turned into something useful?? Look no further than composting.

And no I don’t mean you have to do all the dirty work yourself (unless you want to!). Several members of the Livable Buckhead team use CompostNow in our homes. CompostNow is a valet service that picks up your compost from your front door and does the composting for you. You can even request to get the compost you’ve earned delivered back to you to use in your own home garden. My husband used our compost for his tomato plants last summer and those babies turned out quite delicious!

Our own Denise Starling – Livable Buckhead’s Executive Director – is actually a compost-convert herself. After years of thinking she could never compost at home – the thought was just way too icky – she is now a self-proclaimed “composting fanatic.” So she had the thought to spread the composting joy to Livable Buckhead’s board of directors. She signed each of the board members up for a free two week trial with CompostNow, and we’re proud to report that a number of them stuck with it.

Annie Hirst’s story is especially exciting. She had been wanting to try composting for a long time, and after being thrilled with her experience with CompostNow, she’s actually gifting CompostNow memberships to her family members for the holidays. She says that composting has allowed her to not waste so much, which has been a fun little bright spot in this otherwise difficult year.

Another board member, Amy Williams, lives outside CompostNow’s service area, but that didn’t stop her from jumping on the composting train. She requested a Garden Tower as her birthday gift this year and is loving it. She even uses the compost in her own garden at home too.

Hopefully this shows you how easy it can be to make a meaningful impact by lowering your at-home waste and you come join the composting party!
