CDP names Atlanta a world leader in climate action

 In News, Sustainability

The city of Atlanta has been named a world leader in climate action by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a global nonprofit that runs the world’s environmental disclosure system. Each year, CDP takes the environmental data reported by companies and cities and scores how they are acting on climate change.

Atlanta is on the CDP’s 2022 Cities A-List, which recognizes cities that have received the highest score for their transparency and bold climate action. To score an A, among other actions, a city must disclose publicly through CDP-ICLEI Track, have a city-wide emissions inventory, and have published a climate action plan. A-List cities are demonstrating their climate leadership through concerted and effective action, and are taking 3 times as many mitigation and adaptation measures as non-A-List cities.

The city of Atlanta has 3 main goals in addressing climate change-related issues and has made it a priority in city departments and city council committees: 1) 100% clean energy by 2035; 2) 85% food access goal by 2025 within walking distance (.5 miles); and 3) a community-wide 35% reduction in greenhouse gasses by 2025.

Livable Buckhead’s programs and initiatives centered around community sustainability fall within many of the data topics reported by the city of Atlanta that got them on the A-List.

Our mobility programs and services reduce the number of cars on the road and mitigate emissions, by providing incentives that encourage carpooling, teleworking, transit, biking, and walking. Our partnership with the city of Atlanta, Buckhead Community Improvement District, and local resident neighbors to develop new zoning ordinances for Buckhead’s commercial core has updated this area to incorporate transportation options, connectivity, and greenspace. We’ve been key participants in city-wide programs aimed towards sustainability, including a program that improved recycling outcomes in multifamily properties and the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge, which reduced commercial buildings’ energy and water consumption. We’re spearheading the development of PATH400 and increasing access to meaningful greenspace.
