A Labor Day Worth Recycling
Reduce. Recycle. Reuse.
Follow us on our series ‘Let’s Talk Recycling.’ Recycling is a large part of a sustainable future and something we can all take part in as a community.
Labor Day weekend is here, and it is time for events and parties. Atlanta has a plethora of different moods. Dragon Con, Taste the Flavors of the South, Celebrate Atlanta Black Pride, Whiskey Run, and Summer in the South Film Festival are just a few of the amazing things to attend and celebrate, bringing communities together. Crowds can create a lot of waste. How can just one person help make the holiday eco-friendlier?
Reduce
- Skip the disposable tableware and commit to using reusables for your party or cookout. If you do not have enough, take a trip to the thrift store to grab a few extra. Request people bring their own reusable cups.
- Bike, walk, or carpool to your destination reducing the carbon emissions being emitted on holidays.
Recycle
- Make it easy for your guests to recycle by setting up an organized system for cans, bottles, and tableware. (watch for cross contamination)
- Volunteer for clean up after parades or concerts. Implement your own boxes for designated items.
- If you must purchase single-use tableware, make sure it is either recyclable or compostable.
- Check with your local recycling for hours and times during the holiday. Our favorite Live Thrive CHaRM is closed on Saturday September 2, 2023, but you can schedule another time in advance. The City of Atlanta Office holiday schedule has no collections on Monday September 4, 2023.
Reuse
- Upcycle decorations or displays used or repurpose items around the house. Use old honey jars for flowers or to hold tableware.
- Find creative ideas for beer and soda cans such as making patio string lights or aluminum can lanterns.
- Visit your local thrift store and see what you can find and have a day for the family to create art displays.
Not only will you feel good about contributing to a cleaner holiday, but you may also inspire others around to chip in and help. Who knows, it might be the day someone begins their journey with recycling.
