How to Build a PARK(ing) Day Space

On Friday, September 17th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., 50 parking spaces in the Lenox Square parking lot along Peachtree Road will be transformed into mini-parks as part of PARK(ing) Day. Each participant will be given a standard-sized parking space in the parking lot. The participant can decorate in a way that embodies their organization OR donate the space for a nonprofit to transform. Either way, participants supply materials and theme for the space.

Previous participants have built a temporary urban farm, created a virtual reality park, built a dog park cafe, showcased outdoor living spaces, hosted group yoga, created a virtual rain forest and even a Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirrors exhibit.

What will you do with your mini park? The only limit is your imagination. Keep reading for some steps to ensure your park is successful.

Parking Space Options
  • Know what you’re working with
    • Where? – Your PARK(ing) Day space is being built in the front of Lenox Square
    • What Size? – Parking day space dimensions 9×16 FT
  • What should I include in my park?
    • It’s a good rule of thumb to include a sun shade, seating and an activity that represents you or your organization (This is where you get creative)
  • Can someone help me come up with a park design?
    • Yes. Livable Buckhead will be hosting a Build and Booze event to help our participants brainstorm what their park should look like, what types of materials they should plan for and resources needed to complete your park.
    • Build and Booze 2021: August 19th.
  • What’s the timeline for sourcing materials?
    • To provide shade, groundcover and seating at least a week or two in advance
    • live plants a few days in advance
  • How do I transport materials to and from Lenox Square?
    • First: Make a plan. Can it all fit in your car? Or will you need a pickup truck? Or a U-haul. Think about your material and plan a ride that can accommodate you and your unique park! Remember only 1 vehicle per park is allowed in the event area.
    • Second: Designate your vehicle. Notify Livable Buckhead with the make/model/size of your 1 allotted vehicle
    • Third: Unloading – will need to happen between 6-10AM. No vehicles will be allowed in the designated PARK(ing) Day event space after 10AM. Livable Buckhead will designate your entrance time and which entrance you will be designated to use
    • Fourth: Packing up – Teams will be cleared to exit at 1:30 PM and will go in a predefined order and designated exit, which will be shared the week of the event
  • Cleanup – Have a Plan
    • Recycle – CHaRM and Lifecycle Building Center will take back an unwanted building material or extra materials when the project is over. All parks who are not partnered with CHaRM or Lifecycle Building will need to provide a summary of their recycle/reuse plan.
    • Plants – Living plants, turf and/or ground cover can be permanently planted in yards—or better yet donated to schools or neighbors who need them. Use Craigslist or other apps to keep materials from entering the waste stream. Re-use first and recycle if you can’t re-use. A well-planned park will never end up in landfill.
  • Leave No Trace. Be prepared to completely, totally, utterly leave your parking space in a better condition than you found it. Bring a broom, dustpan, trash bags and a good pair of gloves. Sweep like this is your property, because it is.

Be proud that YOU are a part of a worldwide movement to improve the quality of the public realm and reclaim the streets for people. Your PARK is also a unique expression of your own ideas, creativity and identity. Think ahead to how you will easily explain what’s happening to curious, skeptical or appreciative audiences you’ll encounter out there. We can’t wait to see what you create.
