Livable Buckhead is Tackling Embodied Carbon

 In Culture of Sustainability, Development

Livable Buckhead has partnered with the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) Center for Leadership to bring awareness and education on embodied carbon to the Buckhead community.  The ULI team is helping us to establish tools, policy, and best practices for reducing embodied carbon in commercial development. Briefly, embodied carbon refers to the greenhouse gas emissions arising from all the processes that go into making, maintaining, and demolishing a building. Learn more about embodied carbon here.

The vision with this endeavor is to create for our stakeholders an understanding of embodied carbon in commercial development and provide a path towards an actionable reduction plan – leveraging Buckhead’s commitment to innovation and making its neighborhoods even more livable. As part of this effort, we plan to identify tools and benchmarks that developers and contractors can use to gauge their performance in reducing embodied carbon in commercial development, develop an actionable plan to facilitate developers’ and contractors’ reduction of embodied carbon in the built environment, and ultimately differentiate Buckhead amongst other commercial districts in Atlanta through a sustainability initiative focused on reducing embodied carbon.

To meet these objectives, the ULI team will assist in developing an Embodied Carbon Action Plan for integrating embodied carbon goals for commercial development into the Buckhead district. The plan will include an implementation timeline with milestones, process recommendations, and resources such as case studies. We are also working to create an Embodied Carbon Guidebook for developers, which will provide resources for education, benchmarking, and tools for lowering embodied carbon in commercial development in Buckhead.
