Atlanta’s EV Future: A New Ordinance for a Greener City
Atlanta is stepping up its commitment to sustainability with the 2025 EV Readiness Ordinance amendment. Building on the 2017 ordinance, which required new developments to be EV-capable, the updated regulations go further by mandating that many new homes and commercial spaces include fully operational EV chargers.
For single-family homes, at least one EV-ready space will now be required. Larger residential and commercial developments must equip 20% of parking spaces with chargers, while city-owned parking facilities will lead with even higher requirements. These proactive changes make EV adoption easier and eliminate the high costs of retrofitting chargers later.
Safety is also a priority. Updates to fire codes ensure EV charging spaces are equipped with fire blankets, extinguishers, and proper spacing, keeping both users and buildings secure.
To support this transition, the city is offering incentives, including rebates from Georgia Power, tax credits, and financing through Atlanta’s C-PACE program. These benefits make investing in EV infrastructure more accessible for both homeowners and businesses.
By addressing accessibility and safety, Atlanta is positioning itself as a leader in clean energy and innovation, paving the way for a greener, more connected future.
